Child Care and Education

Child Care and Education

According to UNICEF’s report for 2012, only 57.4% of the total population of Nepal is literate. This number can rise if children are to be given unbiased education facility.

Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” But with lack of proper infrastructure for schools and even lesser qualified professionals to pass on this powerful weapon to children of the marginalized demography, reaching a 100% literacy rate seems a farfetched thought. Children are the future of any nation. If they are well-educated the nation of tomorrow will be in the hands of capable, educated hands. But in a country where child care is still considered a western “thing” and discrimination between son and daughter still prevails at large, proving quality education opportunity and child care facility to all children is debatable.

Education is at the heart of BHH, especially because it was the improper environment of a school that influenced the founders of Basundhara Helping Hands (BHH) to start the organization. One of the main missions of BHH involves around providing children in Nepal with quality education and we believe one doesn’t need proper schooling in order to learn. With the Child Care facility BHH provides, the aim is to educate young minds with creative skill developing activities. Teaching them about everyday important lessons such as first aid, maintaining hygiene and sanitation etc are in the curriculum of the child care facility. Beyond the child care system, BHH contributes towards school-level education by providing scholarships to bright and/or disabled students who display the potential. While various educational activities and programs are on the list BHH’s Education Program, the organization is also attentive towards the basic necessity of a student, such as books, stationery, uniform and other educational materials. The organization isn’t unaware about the need of proper infrastructure, qualified teachers and a suitable environment. And so it is constantly working towards helping build schools in poor villages and marginalized communities. While BHH is doing its level best to improve child care and educational standards of the nation and meet the children with their right to education, it can always use some extra hands to ease the task at hand. You can be the missing piece to the puzzle. You can help too. While you can always donate (provide link) or sponsor a child (provide link), you can also volunteer in community schools that BHH is associated with and help children grow academically.
